Edgar Wright takes subtle swipe at Marvel movies: 'It's ok to take a break'

Edgar reflected on the current state of Hollywood's intellectual property addiction in a recent interview

In a recent interview, Edgar Wright gave franchise producers his million-dollar tip.

In the most recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the 49-year-old director discussed his thoughts on the current status of Hollywood in the wake of the growing popularity of franchises, particularly superhero film series.

"One of the issues with movie franchises is that there's a risk of killing the golden goose sometimes when they announce— I'm not naming names or anything— when they announce like massive slates of movies and TV shows," Wright stated.

It's strange: If I could travel back in time to my early years as a movie enthusiast, and after watching a film, people would say, 'You know what? Throughout the remainder of your life, they will occur every three years. I would think, "Really?" The dearth of funding for new films is what saddens me the most.

He didn't specifically mention any franchises, but it has been standard procedure for Marvel to reveal huge slates of movies and TV shows all at once and spread them out over a number of years.

Wright stated, "I think one of the problems now is that I wish certain films and series that people would understand it's ok to take a break and build anticipation," and he counseled the franchises to "have the sense to just take a breather and let people get excited about it again."

That's what puzzles me, said the creator of Baby Driver. You become the IP's janitor whenever someone enters a studio and takes control. That means that if Warner Bros. is taken over, someone will wonder, "What are we doing with Scooby-Doo?" It is considering the following: "These are our resources." What are we now doing with "Scooby-Doo"? That is essentially what takes place.
